HISTORY AND PRESENT

The decisions on establishing of the Odlewnia Żeliwa „Śrem” (The Iron Foundry „Śrem”) were taken in the years 1963 - 64. Accordingly, since 1st January, 1964, the Subsidiary Division "Zakłady Przemysłu Metalowego H. CEGIELSKI w Poznaniu, Odlewnia Żeliwa w Śremie w budowie" (Metal Industry Works H. CEGIELSKI in Poznań, the Iron Foundry in Śrem in Development) could come into existence within the composition of Zakłady Przemysłu Metalowego "H. CEGIELSKI" in Poznań. The project of the Iron Foundry „Śrem” was developed by the Design Office PRODLEW - Warsaw. The Iron Foundry was designed as divided into the following main production departments:

  • The Central Melting Plant

  • The Experimental -Training Foundry

  • The Foundry of Heavy Castings

  • The Foundry of Medium Castings

  • The Foundry of Light Castings

  • The Pattern Shop

The foundation of the Iron Foundry „Śrem” was to decrease significantly the castings deficit suffered by the Marine Engine, Machine Tool, and Industrial Fittings Industry, as well as to eliminate such castings import. The co-operational character of the Iron Foundry "Śrem" has determined that it was to produce castings in grey, alloy, and spheroidalgraphite cast iron of different classes, in a wide weight range (from 0.3 kg to 30,000 Kgs), in a quantity of about 65.000 tons a year. On the 6th October, 1964, after the preparatory works have been completed, it was proceeded to erect the first production object. This day was recognized as the date of new works erection commencement - what was commemorated in the erection act, build into the foundations.
The production objects were put into operation successively:

  • on the 19th August, 1968 - the first cast carried out in the Central Melting Planti, i,

  • on the 17th October, 1968 - the Foundry of Heavy Castings was put into operation,

On the first January, 1969 the Iron Foundry „Śrem” was transformed into a production plant operating on a full internal self-supporting basis, under the name "Zakłady Przemysłu Metalowego H. CEGIELSKI - Odlewnia Żeliwa w Śremie" ("Metal Industry Works H. CEGIELSKI in Poznań - the Iron Foundry in Śrem"). The building of the foundry was continued. The next departments were put into operation:

  • on the 20th December, 1970 - the Foundry of Medium Castings was put into operation.

  • on the 30th September 1973 - the Foundry of Light Castings was put into operation.

The construction works of the plant were completed in 1974.
From the 1st January, 1994, on the strength of the decision of the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, the "Zakłady Przemysłu Metalowego H. CEGIELSKI w Poznaniu ("Metal Industry Works H. CEGIELSKI in Poznań) were divided, and the independent State-owned enterprise was established, under the name of Odlewnia Żeliwa w Śremie (the Iron Foundry in Śrem). In July 1994 an application to the Ministry of Property Transformations was submitted, for the Iron Foundry transformation into the joint stock company, belonging to the State Treasury, in order to privatise it in a capital way.
